Check out this video I took while visiting Fiji in 2006. Our boat captain took us snorkeling one day, and as is customary, we took a gift of Kava to present to the chief for allowing us to visit their string of islands. The entire village greeted us with this Fijian welcome! After singing, we, along with the Chief and the village elders all drank some of the Kava they had prepared for us. Despite tasting like dirty socks…Kava is the traditional drink of Fiji and is used to welcome visitors or guests. It gives a mildly numbing effect around the tongue and lips, and is said to offer an overall feeling of calm. This helps contribute to the other tradition in Fiji called “Fijian Time”, which is one of the hardest and best things to get a custom to.
I found this article to be extremely helpful in understanding this uniquely Fijian custom. https://royaldavuifiji.com/the-traditional-fijian-kava-ceremony/
